A dazzling novel in the most untraditional fashion, this is the remarkable story of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who travels involuntarily through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist whose life takes a natural sequential course. Henry and Clare's passionate love affair endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap, and it is Audrey Niffenegger's cinematic storytelling that makes the novel's unconventional chronology so vibrantly triumphant.

An enchanting debut and a spellbinding tale of fate and belief in the bonds of love, The Time Traveler's Wife is destined to captivate readers for years to come.

 "Best book ever" 2009-10-30
By Becca (Oakland, CA)
When Henry and Clare meet by chance, Clare is 20 and Henry is 28. Clare has known Henry since she was 6, but Henry has never met Clare before...

I read this book a year and a half ago, and I haven't been able to get it out of my mind. It is by far my favorite book. It's the one book I refuse to lend to anyone now.

The plot is really original. Sure, there are a lot of books about time traveling, but not one like this. What's really great about the story is that by the EIGHTH page, you don't want to put the book down. I have never been sucked into a book so quickly.

I have read reviews where people have claimed the writing was pretentious or horrible, but I completely disagree. I love Niffenegger's writing style. She makes the characters come to life. Henry and Clare seemed more real to me than any other characters in any other book. Some also claim that her writing is confusing, and that they got lost. I did not have that problem.

I had trouble putting this book down, and I didn't think it could get any better, until I got to the last 100 pages, which then made it impossible to put the book down. I was up really late finishing it. And then I cried and cried. Also, I did not want the book to end. After I read it, I could not read any other book for a while, because I had never read such a great book, and no other book that I attempted to read after could compare to this one.

"Take Some Time to Read This Story!" 2009-10-28
By Terry A. Benedict-Devine (Barnegat, NJ)
At the start of the novel, I was pretty sure that it was going to get the lowest rating on the scale. The reading was totally confusing and made me very skeptical about the manner of writing and the crazy timelines running all over the place. However, as I kept reading, everything started to fall into place and I discovered fabulous, heartwarming personalities in the characters of Henry and Clare. Henry is described as having a chrono-impairment disorder, but we do not get any kind of believable explanation as to his "comings and goings" (no pun intended) until later on in the story. This makes the start of the novel somewhat hard to follow. Clare meets Henry at age six, but he doesn't meet her until he is 28 and she is 20. This all sounds very confusing but as you read along, you do "get it!" The story is very romantic and touching in the course of their trials of courtship, marriage and family. Without giving the plot away, I can go no further. Suffice it to say, this is an excellent book. You will fall in love with the main characters as well as appreciate the supporting ones even though it would have been nice to have had more of a plot in the lives of supporting characters, Gomez and Charisse. Henry and Clare provide the reader with an intimate feeling of joy as well as hardship throughout the course of their lives. In a surprising twist of fate, they seem to become one in Henry's time travel at the progression of each year and stage of their lives. Don't miss out on this beautiful story!

"Tricky Concept Disguishing Poor Writing" 2009-10-28
By Andrew Davison
The time-traveling concept isn't used to enrich the love story but rather to disguise poor writing (disconnected bits and pieces), a lack of character development, the absence of real emotions, and anything resembling a plot.

There's an underlying creepiness to the relationships, reflected in age disparities between the main characters, the sexual crudity, and Clare's passivity.

 "Sad ending." 2009-10-28
By B. O'Brien
I liked the book and thought the author did a great job of switching back and forth from one person to the other to give different accounts. I didn't like the sad ending.
